esources OCTOBER 2004

In October's esources, the Semaphore house is crawling with creative ideas including: the tricks and treats of radio production, the prowlings of semaphore staff after dark, our newest graphic designer's magic moments, how to avoid a ghastly web site design, a mentee is resurrected as an intern and many more gory details...

Features

Money Matters
Advertisers will spend more than $20 billion on radio this year. Creative production and strategic placement are crucial to making this fragmented market cost effective for you.

Business Beat
Fifty million people are moving to the South over the next twenty years. Semaphore's Andrew Folks summarizes a recent population study and how this remarkable relocation may change the way we live and do business.

In the Web
A Web site has only seconds to make a good first impression. So how do you take advantage of these precious seconds to inform, convince, or impress your audience?

Four With...
Semaphore's newest graphic designer, Pam Thomas, discusses nature, art in advertising and being in the moment.

Semaphore News

Making the grade
Denmark Technical College (DTC) selected Semaphore to design its 10 Year President's Report. The report will be published in early 2005. The report will include the college's grant work with NASA and projects with the U.S. Department of Labor.

Once More for the One Cent Solution
The Newberry County Chamber of Commerce recently selected Semaphore to help market its One Cent Solution campaign to persuade county residents to continue a one percent sales and usage tax.

If passed, the November 2 referendum would be a continuation of an existing one percent sales tax passed in 1998 that has helped pay for a host of countywide infrastructure improvements. Semaphore created the original One Cent Solution campaign and has further developed and updated it to include collateral, print, billboard and broadcast materials. Hear (MP3) the One Cent Solution radio spot or download the print materials (PDF).

Cooperative Creativity
The electric cooperatives took on a new approach in their recent Surge Guard campaign. Semaphore designed new messages including: "Nosy Neighbor," a humorous approach to the intrusion and annoyance caused by power surges in the home.

Historic Welcome Service
The South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church welcomed its first female Bishop, Mary Taylor (and the first female bishop in any mainline church in SC) with a service of welcome in September. Semaphore helped the Conference get the word out about the Bishop by issuing a media alert and press release about the service.

Semaphore Talent Shines - After Hours
See the artwork of Semaphore staff at the SC State Fair. Two paintings by Marian Pearce and two photographs by Amy Kinard will be featured in this year's fine arts exhibit in the Cantey Building.

Agency President Cynthia Gilliam returns to the stage at Trustus in the role of Marks in "Talking With," directed by Jim Thigpen. The show opens October 29th and runs for three weeks. The play is composed of ten short monologues by extraordinary women who reveal information about themselves, which is often shocking and endearing. It is not for the faint-hearted!

New Faces at Semaphore
Associate Account Executive Andrew Folks is the newest member of the Semaphore team. He brings previous experience in integrated communications, political fundraising, and sales. See his bio.

Semaphore welcomes intern Cathy Bradberry, a senior at Columbia College majoring in Studio Art with minors in Communication and Journalism. She's the president of ABT, the art honor society, and Editor of the Columbia College Criterion, the college's art and literary magazine. Last year, Bradberry was mentored by Cynthia Gilliam through "Leader to Leader," a program of the Leadership Institute of Columbia College.
