How did you get interested in advertising?
I wanted to go to college and study art. My parents thought that was not such a practical idea: "I'm not paying all this good money for basket weaving classes!" In advertising, I get to do my art and it is not a solitary occupation-I can share my ideas with others and collaborate, day in and day out.
Who or what inspires you?
Nature is my biggest inspiration and what keeps me sane. Trees are my favorite! There is no improving on the perfect beauty of nature.
On the human side, I love going to galleries and museums and seeing other artists' works. My favorite fine artists are Picasso, Van Gogh and Ansel Adams.
What do you think makes an ad successful?
It's important that the audience remembers the product. My favorite ads are funny and soothing. And even though I'm an artist, I pay lots of attention to words. One of my favorites, a car ad titled, "Nobody knows it but me," with James Garner's voice reading beautiful text.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Being in the moment with no thoughts of the past or the future. I want to experience everything then and there. That's why I have no problem turning off my cell phone; we all should try that now and then.
