1. What do you think in unique about the advertising business?

The advertising business is such an interesting combination of skills and people. I don't think there is any other business like it that combines artistic talent with facts, figures, and writing. So much goes into designing a marketing scheme, and the audience demographics are only a small portion of the research that must be compiled. Then the design must be created and marketed. And don't forget the accountants and pencil pushers who actually bill the client and keep up with expenditures. It really is such an interesting combination of art and numbers.

2. What have you learned at Semaphore?

Interestingly enough, I've learned that you don't ever have to grow up. Inevitably, you grow older, but you don't really have to grow up. I've also learned that a workplace is much more collaborative than I ever thought it would be. I never really understood how much the group depends on each member to accomplish a goal. Apparently, and this is another life lesson, success greatly depends on who you know. Contacts and connections are invaluable. Skills and knowledge are important, but they won't get you as far if you don't know the right people.

3. As a Columbia College student, why is this field suited for women?

Women are better at reading nonverbal cues. When talking to clients, we can read and understand what isn't being stated verbally. We also understand and can target an audience well because of this trait. We can use nonverbal communication to sell a product or company to a certain demographic. And, I think young women, especially, have a good idea about popular culture and how to sell to a younger demographic. Women are also incredibly well suited to being persuasive without being aggressive.

4. Where do you go from here?

In about four months, I'll graduate from Columbia College. I'm ready for that next step, and I'm excited about getting out into the "real world" as they call it. I'll be looking for a job, and just to remind possible employers, I will have a BA in studio art (emphasis in drawing), with minors in communication and journalism. I have experience in telemarketing for Columbia College Admissions, and I currently work weekends at SCETV radio.
