esources July/August 2005

In this edition of esources, we take a look at the value of simplicity; how white space is a design element; a web address alone speaks volumes; one word defines an entire college - all to teach us that, when it comes to sending signals: sometimes, less is more.

White Space...The Final Frontier
A graphic designer's mission: to explore strange new ideas, to seek out new images and approaches, …and sometimes to boldly put nothing where something has gone before.

URL Power
In one simple phrase, a web address can say it all. Strategists find lots of power in the well-placed, ever-present dot-com (or dot-org or dot-gov or dot-edu or…)

Semaphore News

Everything old is "Blue" Again
Blue Lake Recycling is launching its new brand with the help of Semaphore. The company's new logo and tagline say it all, offering customers a chance to make a positive difference in the environment while also making some extra cash. That's right--the customers make money! Blue Lake will pick up any expended ink jet cartridges collected by businesses, organizations, schools, churches, etc. and see that the client or a charity of its choice gets money back. They will also supply their clients with all the necessary materials to make it work. For information about this win-win service, call or email Sam Lake at sam.lake@bluelakerecycling.com.

Florence County Agency Partners With Semaphore
Semaphore has been hired to create a new logo for The Florence County Economic Development Partnership (FCEDP). Semaphore creative staff will work with FCEDP representatives to design a new branding icon that will help position Florence County as a premier site location for both new and expanding businesses. Semaphore is proud to have a new partner in the Pee Dee and we look forward to helping Florence County enhance their local economy.

Creative Director Jackson receives divine recognition
Creative director Roc Jackson's front page design and article layout of Crosswalk were recognized by the national Episcopal Communicator's conference, held this year in Salt Lake City. Crosswalk is the monthly magazine of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina, edited by Peggy Van Antwerp Hill. Roc's design for the Easter 2004 edition's front page won an Award of Excellence.

Thornwell Student Featured in Sports Illustrated
Semaphore recently helped the Thornwell Home & School for Children garner national publicity in the June issue of Sports Illustrated. With some public relations assistance by account executive Andrew Folks, Thornwell student Claire Young was spotlighted for winning a pole vault event. Semaphore is currently implementing a marketing and rebranding campaign for Thornwell, an upstate residential and educational facility.

Semaphore Delivers for Palmetto Economic Development Corporation
Semaphore recently gave birth to a new campaign for the Palmetto Economic Development Corporation. In the introductory ad, an infant inquisitively views the globe which has a SC Power team logo superimposed on it. The ad urges businesses to "Discover a world of possibilities" while positioning South Carolina as an ideal choice for business relocation or expansion. Semaphore was glad to once again assist longtime client PEDC (but please, don't call us when you need a babysitter!).
