esources February/March 2006

In this esources, we take a look at our love of spending-for-love; at mascots who are not so warm and fuzzy; and at the costs of preparing a budget. Plus, we have awards and other good news in Semaphore's insider's guide to advertising and public relations.

The Costs of Doing Business
The Semaphore creative team asked our accounting team to explain to us why we lose money when we don't charge for budgeting and media research services. Fortunately for us, one of our accountants is also a writer.

Semaphore News

Semaphore Wins Addy
Semaphore’s Roc Jackson and Robbie Robertson won a Silver Addy at this year’s Columbia Ad Club awards for their Historic Columbia Homes and Gardens Tour campaign. They were recognized in the category of "Campaign: Collateral Material – Special Event" for their striking design used in posters, bookmarks, invitations and ads.

Semaphore Conducts SCSU Media Training
On February 4th, Semaphore conducted media training with top administrators from South Carolina State University. Participants in the training, part of the SCSU Administrative Team Retreat, heard tips on how to prepare for media interviews and how to conduct themselves in interviews to achieve maximum effect for the desired message. Select SCSU staff members practiced simulated interview situations and were critiqued on their responses. Team members left the event with printed notes of all points discussed.

Good News for The Salvation Army
Recently, Semaphore completed the layout and first issue - Winter 2006 - of The Good News, the new newsletter of The Salvation Army of the South Carolina Midlands. To be mailed to area constituents five times yearly, the newsletter details the Salvation Army's programs, fundraising initiatives, and reports on the folks that support The Army as volunteers, donors, and board members. The Winter 2006 issue commemorates The Salvation Army's 100th year of service to the South Carolina Midlands.

Wikipedia
Think of it as an online Cliffs Notes for just about anything. We suggest Wikipedia as an excellent source to get general knowledge about almost any subject quickly. It’s also free and multilingual – but there is a catch. As you use Wikipedia, keep in mind that anybody can make changes to its entries at anytime. It is great for getting general information or to see what online publics perceive, but should not be used for serious work or work to be published – without verification from additional credible sources.

Vet verb [ trans. ]
To proof, to make a careful and critical examination of an item (in our case: copy, comps or ideas).
