Semaphore redesigns ECSC website

Semaphore proudly launched a completely redesigned website for the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina (ECSC) on June 6.

The old website was technologically out-of-date and needed a complete overhaul. The new website had to represent ECSC as an organization that prides itself on providing the most technologically advanced and environmentally sound electric services to the state of South Carolina.

The new website had to look current and be built to last. To achieve these objectives, Semaphore used many design and programming features that the previous website was lacking (mostly because many of the features weren't fully developed when the original website was built).

Semaphore installed an extensive content management system. This will allow ECSC to easily add, delete and edit website content. This new feature is cost effective and keeps the website as current as possible. Users need and appreciate a current site. It will also help increase ECSC's search engine rankings.

The website also runs off of a cascading style sheet (CSS), which has become the norm since the creation of the old site. A CSS contains all of the information that tells the website how the pages are supposed to look. The font colors, sizes, styles and decorations as well as page backgrounds, link colors and many other attributes are saved within the CSS. A change within the CSS will take effect throughout the entire site and eliminate the need to make changes on each individual page.

The new website is built in a PHP file type system instead of an HTML system. There are many features that just can't be used in basic HTML pages, but PHP has nearly limitless possibilities. PHP positions the site for future growth and updates.

Some of the added features on the new site are:

  • An events calendar that automatically updates by showing the newest events on the home page and automatically deletes expired events.
  • An employees-only password-protected section where members can use a message board to share news and information, read internal newsletters, access secure information, and more.
  • A newsroom with current press releases that can be used as feature items on the home page.
  • An employment opportunities section.
  • A new and improved Living in South Carolina Magazine section.

Those are just a few of the changes. New content and features will be added to the website for enhanced usability in the weeks to come. Check out the sleek, redesigned site at www.ecsc.org.

Semaphore News

S.C. Co-ops Win Spotlight on Excellence Awards

Semaphore client South Carolina Electric Cooperative Alliance recently won two 2007 Spotlight on Excellence awards in a national awards program sponsored by the Council of Rural Electric Communicators and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The Alliance swept the "Best Advertising Program" category, winning the Award of Excellence for its 2006 "Value of Electricity" campaign and the Award of Merit for its 2006 "Community Ads" campaign. Both campaigns were created by Semaphore.

The Alliance represents a unique concept among South Carolina electric cooperatives. Eleven co-ops have joined together to work with Semaphore as we create and produce their marketing materials. This allows the co-ops to not only save money on production costs, but to present a unified message throughout the state. Members of the Alliance are: Aiken, Berkeley, Coastal (Georgia), Fairfield, Horry, Laurens, Mid-Carolina, Palmetto, Santee, Tri-County, and York electric cooperatives.

South Carolina Self Insurers Association (SCSIA)
Finds a Home on the Web

The SCSIA has been in existence for over thirty years. The Association helps employers become self insured with respect to workers' compensation. It also tracks and develops workers' compensation legislation. For many years the SCSIA existed on the web within other national self insurer sites or shared space with other entities on larger sites. Recently, Mobashir Salahuddin (Executive Director of the SCSIA) turned to Semaphore Inc. to develop a stand alone web site for the SCSIA at scselfinsurers.com. We continued the use of SCSIA's long established apricot and khaki color scheme. The web site has a flash graphic throughout that moves slowly so that the web site has a technologically current feel but doesn't distract the user from the information they seek. Semaphore Inc. also set the web site up with supreme SEO (Search Engine Optimization), helping the website to climb the search engine rankings, after being on the web for only a few weeks. An equally important part of SEO efforts for the web site is constantly changing the content within the site; Mr. Salahuddin consistently updates the site with news relating to workers' compensation legislation.

Semaphore Turns on a Dime (Again)

Semaphore client Historic Columbia Foundation (HCF) recently had an opportunity to gain national exposure with the back cover of The Catalogue of Antiques and Fine Art. The only catch was the ad was due on a very tight deadline. HCF knew they could turn to Semaphore.

Creative Director Roc Jackson designed an elegant ad touting HCF's Columbia area house museums. HCF made their deadline and was able to take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to spread their message.

REVERSE DNS - This is a process to determine the domain name or host associated with any given IP address or host address. If your email is constantly being blocked by other people, it may be because you don't have a reverse DNS on your email server. Many email servers will not accept emails from an address that doesn't have a reverse DNS. Spammers commonly don't have a reverse DNS because they want it to be harder for you to blacklist them. When your email goes out to other email servers it says "hello, this is where I'm from" if you have a Reverse DNS. If you don't have a reverse DNS your email goes to other email servers and the conversation goes something like this: "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Let me in and find out." So you see why some servers choose not to open the door.
